Swedish relief as Wolfsburg set record

Swedish duo Tyresö FF and FCR Malmö progressed, holders VfL Wolfsburg set a new record and FC Barcelona upset Brøndby IF as 12 round of 32 ties were settled.

Swedish sides Tyresö FF and FCR Malmö both came through tough UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 encounters as 12 second legs were played on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, there were contrasting fortunes for Denmark's two entrants, holders VfL Wolfsburg set a new record, and Olympique Lyonnais and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam ensured a rematch with 6-0 wins apiece. UEFA.com rounds up the night's action; the four remaining ties are completed on Thursday.

Paris Saint-Germain FC 0-0 Tyresö FF (agg: 1-2)
Tyresö made up for relinquishing their Swedish title to Malmö on Sunday by holding firm to oust dangerous opponents PSG. Leading the tie 2-1, the European debutants put in an impressively compact performance in the French capital, limiting PSG to very few chances. Marie-Laure Delie forced Ashlyn Harris to turn wide and a deflected Laure Boulleau effort hit the crossbar before the break, but that was as good as it got for Farid Benstiti's side.

Fortuna Hjørring 2-0 UPC Tavagnacco (agg: 4-3)
The 2004 runners-up Fortuna lost a two-goal lead in Italy last week to go down 3-2 in the first leg but this time they made a similar advantage stick. Fortuna were the better team and won the match through a header from Kur Larsen before half-time and a splendid 81st-minute finish from Laura Rus, smashing the ball into the opposite top corner. A six-minute delay was caused by floodlight failure but Fortuna held on and will attempt to avoid a fifth straight round of 16 exit against Tyresö.

Brøndby IF 2-2 FC Barcelona (agg: 2-2, Barcelona win on away goals)
There was no such luck for Denmark's other representatives as Barcelona won a European tie for the first time, having lost 7-0 on aggregate to Arsenal LFC last season. Brøndby did well to hold out for a 0-0 draw last week but were on top from the start tonight, Sanne Troelsgaard having the first effort on goal after just 42 seconds and pressure from a succession of corners told on 25 minutes through Anja Thorsen.

Barcelona were a revived team after the interval and Marta Corredera put them ahead on away goals in the 52nd minute, rocking Brøndby. The tie was beyond the home side three minutes from the end when Jelena Čanković found the target although her fellow substitute Simone Boye Sørensen gave Brøndby fresh hope with a goal deep in added time.

AC Sparta Praha (CZE) 1-1 FC Zürich Frauen (agg: 2-3)
Barcelona now face Zürich, who augmented their first-leg advantage when 18-year old left-back Karin Bernet led a swift counterattack and sent a beautifully curled cross for Mirjine Selimi, 16, to meet with a precise header into the top right-hand corner. Sparta were being allowed little space by the well-organised visiting defence but the second-half introduction of Lucie Hloupá helped their cause.

Iva Mocová scored from distance on 66 minutes to give them hope but, even though Sparta kept up the pressure after they lost Tereza Krejčiříková to a red card, Zürich held on. They will hope to match the result from their men's team's only previous meeting with Barcelona: a 3-2 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup first-round aggregate win in 1967.

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 6-0 MTK Hungária FC (agg: 11-0)
Two-time champions Potsdam took 62 minutes to make a breakthrough. But once Asano Nagasato struck, Nataša Andonova and Antonia Göransson added further goals within three minutes. That trio also scored again in the last six minutes.

Olympique Lyonnais 6-0 FC Twente (agg: 10-0)
Potsdam now meet fellow two-time winners Lyon, who they beat in the 2010 final only to lose in the decider 12 months later. Last season's runners-up Lyon started without Lotta Schelin and Megan Rapinoe but Eugénie Le Sommer and Élodie Thomis combined to release Laetitia Tonazzi, whose effort under the bar broke the deadlock on 13 minutes. Louisa Nécib added a second from 30 metres out 12 minutes later and Lyon took full control with the skills of Lara Dickenmann and the speed of Thomis leaving Twente reeling. Élise Bussaglia and Le Sommer added goals after half-time before Schelin and Rapinoe, off the bench, got themselves on the scoresheet.

VfL Wolfsburg 13-0 Pärnu JK (27-0)

The holders set a new aggregate record score for any UEFA competition against the first Estonian club to make this stage. Lyn Meyer, who stood out with Stephanie Bunte in a changed XI, got a hat-trick, a feat matched by Conny Pohlers, taking her record all-time competition tally to 48.

FCR Malmö 5-0 LSK Kvinner FK (agg: 8-1)
Fresh from regaining the Swedish title on Sunday, Malmö capped a great week with another fine win against the Norwegian representatives. Ramona Bachmann performed excellently and scored a great individual goal while there were two each for Manon Melis and Anja Mittag, who became only the second player to score more than 40 in UEFA women's club competition. She could come up against the first, her former Potsdam team-mate Pohlers, when Malmö face Wolfsburg in the round of 16.

ASD Torres Calcio 3-1 FSK St. Pölten-Spratzern (agg: 5-3)
Torres, quarter-finalists last season, saw off the challenge of the Austrian debutants. The Italian side equalised in the last minute a week ago through Sabrina Marchese and a spectacular left-foot effort from Sandy Maendly crowned a bright opening from the hosts today. The lead doubled when Patrizia Panico tucked in Giulia Domenichetti's pass for her 30th career European goal. Substitute Sandy Iannella added a third before Lisa Makas grabbed a consolation.

SV Neulengbach 1-1 Apollon Limassol LFC (agg: 3-2)
Apollon's international squad were only just unable to overturn their first-leg deficit in Austria. Neulengbach were on the back foot from early on but the visitors could not convert their chances. The home team picked up after the break and struck through Alexandra Bíróová following a 58th-minute corner. Apollon started to press again and Sinead Farrelly gave them hope with 13 minutes left but they could not force extra time. They will now meet either RTP Unia Racibórz or Konak Belediyesi, who play tomorrow.

Birmingham City LFC 1-0 PK-35 Vantaa (agg: 4-0)
Beaten on their debut tie at this stage last year, Birmingham were all but through already after a 3-0 win last week in Finland. On a pitch that had been battered by rain in the hours leading up to kick-off, Birmingham dominated proceedings in the first half with Kirstly Linnett being denied on several occasions and Karen Carney firing just wide shortly before the break. However the deadlock was finally broken five minutes into the second period after Chelsea Weston exchanged passed with England attacker Carney and the full-back burst into the penalty area before firing a low shot past Paula Myllyoja.

FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk 4-1 Thór/KA (agg: 6-2)
Birmingham will face Zorkiy, who started brightly and put their Icelandic opponents out of sight with three goals in a 12-minute first-half spell. The dominant right-winger Elena Morozova pounced when Alyssa Mautz's 22nd-minute cross was dropped by Victoria Alonzo and soon after Maria Ruiz set up Vira Dyatel. Nick Ashley made it three following Morozova's solo run and although visiting captain Arna Ásgrímsdóttir pulled one back with a headed just before the hour mark, Mautz quickly responded with a solo effort.
