• The versatile attacker's career came full circle in 2011 when she returned to home-town team Birmingham for the new FA Women's Super League (WSL) after five years away. The following May she scored the extra-time equaliser in FA Cup final against Chelsea LFC, her club winning the trophy for the first time on penalties.

• Carney made her senior Birmingham debut aged 14 in 2001, and four years later was given her England bow, coming off the bench to score in a 4-1 friendly defeat of Italy,

• Soon an England regular, Carney's late goal earned England a 3-2 victory in their UEFA Women's EURO 2005 opener in front of a then record crowd of 29,092 at the City of Manchester Stadium. She has since played at two other UEFA Women's EUROs – scoring in the 2009 final – two FIFA Women's World Cups and the 2012 Olympics.

• In 2006 Carney switched to Arsenal and in her first term helped the Gunners to a clean sweep of trophies, including the UEFA Women's Cup.

• She was drafted by the Red Stars for the inaugural American WPS season in 2009; when that side folded in 2011 Carney moved to Birmingham, twice running Arsenal close for the WSL title.

Casey Stoney

• The current England captain, centre-back Stoney is one of several players in the squad with more than 100 caps.

• Given her first senior chance by Arsenal, she made her England debut aged 18 in 2000. A move to Charlton followed in 2002 and she skippered them to their first FA Women's Cup final in her maiden season.

• Stoney helped Charlton to 2004 and 2006 League Cup and 2005 FA Cup success, but in 2007 the club withdrew funding from their women's section and she joined Chelsea.

• During four years at Chelsea she had a spell as player-manager in 2009. However, for the new FA Women's Super League in 2011 she switched to Lincoln.

• Stoney was an unused squad member at UEFA Women's EURO 2005 but has since appeared at the 2009 (where England were runners-up) and 2013 finals, plus the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women's World Cups and the 2012 Olympics – where she captained Great Britain.
